  1. What's new in this club
  2. I wonder if that is only one of many childhood memories that are invoked during this book. Things that are endemic and part of growing up black in america and also perhaps why Barack always seemed to be able to respond differently or not at all (like it didnt phase him). I used to get that all the time from adults and children. Funny thing about that was I was trying to emulate my mother who was a secretary and who had diction to die for ! lol
  3. What really struck me was the part of Michelle's childhood when her friend (or I think it was a cousin) asked "Why do you talk like a white girl?" That was also my experience growing up. I'll never forget visiting my family in South Carolina and they asked me that same question. The way Michelle wrote her reaction was exactly how I felt. I felt offended yet ashamed. It was a weird feeling and kind of a surprise since I didn't know that I sounded "different". That part of her story has really resonated with me. I'm still reading...can't wait to explore more.
  4. Whether you are just starting this book or have already dived in you are aware that it is autobiographical and the time line takes us through Michelle's childhood growing up in Chicago. Some questions to ponder Would you ever - if given the opportunity, write your own autobiography ? Why ? Did the tone and imagery invoked in these initial chapters resonate or invoke any childhood memories?
