    just stuff

    By ThaBossLady

Dinosaurs have always been an extremely varied group of animals; according to a 2006 study, over 500 non-avian dinosaur genera have been identified with certainty so far, and the total number of genera preserved in the fossil record has been estimated at around 1850, nearly 75% of which remain to be discovered. A detailed assessment of archosaur interrelations by Sterling Nesbitt confirmed or found the following twelve unambiguous synapomorphies, some previously known: Nesbitt found a number of further potential synapomorphies, and discounted a number of synapomorphies previously suggested. Some of these are also present in silesaurids, which Nesbitt recovered as a sister group to Dinosauria, including a large anterior trochanter, metatarsals II and IV of subequal length, reduced contact between ischium and pubis, the presence of a cnemial crest on the tibia and of an ascending process on the astragalus, and many others. The Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event, which occurred approximately 66 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous period, caused the extinction of all dinosaur groups except for the neornithine birds. Some other diapsid groups, such as crocodilians, sebecosuchians, turtles, lizards, snakes, sphenodontians, and choristoderans, also survived the event. Dinosaurs belong to a group known as archosaurs, which also includes modern crocodilians. Within the archosaur group, dinosaurs are differentiated most noticeably by their gait. Dinosaur legs extend directly beneath the body, whereas the legs of lizards and crocodilians sprawl out to either side.

Morgan – I Love A Rainy Night

Morgan here, it actually hasn’t rained in a day or two, but Momma says we are going to get it again later today something about winter storm something or another.  Meh last time I heard that on the tv box nothing really happened. At least we got to go out and get some training sessions in.  Momma  says training has to be one on one because she says “ya’ll play too much” Momma has been working on my heeling.  Shuri needs to work on being on a leash period. Her puppy brain is all over the place. Another week before I go back to group class and am looking forward to it and  all the new smells. And it is raining, YET again…..Momma’s saying something about someone called Noah and an Ark? Lil Shuri doesn’t like being on leash, like most puppies. But she will learn….. I still don't know how to Social media properly!

Anyone ever get confused by Instagram or even Facebook with all the new fangled updates? Is it just me and I'm missing that gene that makes it all make sense?
I tried to send a video to a friend for her Birthday on Instagram and by mistake discovered they have video chat. Who knew?

Morgan’s Reindeer Protest

Morgan here, I know one  thing, if somebody doesn’t come and get these things off my head there will be problems. I told momma if she liked these “antlers” so much why doesn’t she wear them, but I don’t think she understood me. The post Morgan’s Reindeer Protest appeared first on The Tail Swishes.

A Very Shuri Christmas

Shuri Here, Whoot !  momma says that today, December 25th,  is my birthday. Not sure what that means. After poking Momma with my nose a few times she says its the day i was born on.  and it has been exactly 1 year.  Momma says its a very special day.. Someone very very important was born on this day too ! Cool I would love to play with him. Not sure why momma is frowning at me right now? I just wanna play? Momma says if im really really good I will get special goodies for my birthday Oh Boy I can’t wait ! No really I can’t wait.   Momma says I can have a slice of my birthday cake since, its already Christmas. I poked Momma with my nose again and asked, momma what’s Christmas.   I crawled into her lap and put my head down while Momma told me about Christmas….. The Christmas Story And It came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was that while they were there the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, an laid him in a manager because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And lo the angel of the Lord came upon them and the glory of the Lord shone round about them and they were sore afraid.  And the angel said unto them, Fear Not, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great Joy which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign to you, you shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in the manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace and good will toward men. Morgan The Mud Puppy

Morgan here, not sure what the big deal is. I know its been raining every day for weeks on end. I know we have gotten to go on extended walks because of it. Not sure what “muddy little feet” means. I think it has something to do with the carpet. I know Momma says we can’t go out in the backyard much and she seems to get upset when we go over to the side that doesn’t have as much grass.  I hear Momma running water in the bathtub – not another bath? Shuri told me she got all the leaves and twigs out but i guess she missed a few. Oh well I better go see what mom wants  and I think it has something to do with a bath and something about mud puppies. At least that’s what Momma said. Oh well….. A Nerd For All Seasons

In a world where the value or lack thereof is denoted by the material or the title of a thing, whereas the true value is often lost. In the rush to mark what something is, by giving it a name, we often diminish the true value.   Wearing many hats is not such an abstract concept.  One can be and usually is many things.  In the nerd world, One can be a cosplayer, into sci fi, a tech geek, and a library nerd all in  the space of one lifespan. Are we all so bound to the myth of titles that we allow ourselves then also  pressed to identify with one or the other?  Or is it just the human desire to belong - that compels us to self identify as one thing over another simply to "fit In" with a group? I am so sure that nerd-dom is not so easily defined. Spend some time around people who self identify as nerds or blerds - you will come away with a key take-away. Multifaceted interests that each of their own could be a thing. Most nerds are not the sum total of one, but instead have a range. It is only in recent years that we have been encouraged to wear  our nerdom proudly. Indeed only in recent  years has being a nerd become a "good" thing or a popular thing. Being an older nerd I can attest to their being a time where you really didn't want to be known as a nerd life would be infinitely more difficult for you especially if you were still  in school.  Fast forward to today, and here is a place that I never would have imagine existing. A community , of nerds and for nerds. Where you can indulge all the facets of your nerd behavior without judgement and among those who are just like you. While some may invoke the human need for acceptance, sometimes one just would like to be able to have a conversation with someone who "gets it" and for whom you don't have to explain  what you are talking about every five seconds. Someone once asked me what my superpower was - my response - being a nerd.  If i could jump back in time and edit that I would say being a multifaceted nerd that wears many many hats.  At least on some days not every day.  You cant do puppies, history, sci  fi, digital art, reading, mythology, travel, 3D graphics, every single day.....or can you ?  Hmmm......oh well got my 3d in for the day at least.    P.S.  the image was created by myself in Daz Studio.

trees a test

In tropical regions with a monsoon or monsoon-like climate, where a drier part of the year alternates with a wet period as in the Amazon rainforest, different species of broad-leaved trees dominate the forest, some of them being deciduous. Some trees such as the alders (Alnus species) have a symbiotic relationship with Frankia species, a filamentous bacterium that can fix nitrogen from the air, converting it into ammonia. They have actinorhizal root nodules on their roots in which the bacteria live. This process enables the tree to live in low nitrogen habitats where they would otherwise be unable to thrive. It has been demonstrated that some trees are interconnected through their root system, forming a colony. The interconnections are made by the inosculation process, a kind of natural grafting or welding of vegetal tissues. The tests to demonstrate this networking are performed by injecting chemicals, sometimes radioactive, into a tree, and then checking for its presence in neighbouring trees. Some tree species have developed root extensions that pop out of soil, in order to get oxygen, when it is not available in the soil because of excess water. These root extensions are called pneumatophores, and are present, among others, in black mangrove and pond cypress. The main purpose of the trunk is to raise the leaves above the ground, enabling the tree to overtop other plants and outcompete them for light.

Collie Rescue – Morgan’s View

This is Morgan, Shuri told me that the human was leaking fluid again. Shook my head on that one. She told me about the Collie that had been rescued and what she looked like from the pictures. Some humans just don’t get this whole dog thing. They are just too greedy and without conscience. I bet if they caught the people that had this dog they would say…”well it’s only a dog…”  Grrrrr I remember once we used to go to this place to get me groomed, and the lady at the desk got real nasty and kept asking how much I cost and kept saying oh but i bet it was REAL expensive.  My human seemed to be a little upset and was trying to hurry up and leave.  Once we got in the car to go home, she started leaking fluids but at the time I couldn’t figure out why.  We never went back to that place. Now, I know why. Too bad they don’t have paypal for dogs, I would definitely send something to…I believe her name is Godiva? Will tell human to send some hugs – and maybe some milkbones? Meh, humans are  just so weird. NOTE: You can visit the Collie Rescue of the Carolina’s website to donate to Godiva and or the organization itself. No gift is too small and they all will appreciate it! The post Collie Rescue – Morgan’s View appeared first on The Tail Swishes.

A Lesson about Rescue

This is Shuri. My human had to help me with the typing a little.  Most early Sunday mornings I get to spend time with my human in her computer room.  I always get a real neat toy to play with while she surfs the net or does real complicated computer stuff. Today was one of those days where my human’s eyes were leaking fluid. I think she said its tears. I came over and poked her with my nose to find out what was wrong.  She said something about a story she just read about this poor dog who had been rescued and what horrible conditions she had been living in. My human said she never saw a collie in that bad of condition and it made her heart hurt, and made her cry. I didn’t know what to do about that, so I decided to play with my human and i tried to grab her hand so she would come play with me. She smiled at least. And I got a nice cheesy treat of some kind. Yaay me ! I heard her  say something about making a donation and that sometimes its real hard to like humans.  Then she said the people who rescued this dog restore one’s faith in humanity. Shrugs, I just think  humans are weird but what do I know I’m just a puppy. NOTE: There are no words to describe the dedication and commitment of those who volunteer to take in dogs like this, that would more than likely have been put down if sent to a shelter, or who would have eventually just died wandering around. This is something that gains no glory, or notoriety. It is the love for the animals and wanting to help that drives the volunteers.  Contrary to popular belief, there is some humanity left in some humans. Please know that rescue operations like this operate on donations and the kindness of strangers. Please take a minute tovisit their site and  donate whatever you can, no amount is too small. While you are at it say a prayer for Godiva and the wonderful people at the Collie Rescue of The Carolinas The post A Lesson about Rescue appeared first on The Tail Swishes.

There’s a New Kid In Town

After a long slog home, Introductions are made and intense cuteness ensues. Too small yet to truly hang out with the big girls, but completely unafraid. Morgan knows there’s something here that moves that she can play with and that smells familiar. I may die of a cuteness overload before all is said and done. Backyard Shenanigans

An important part of owning dogs especially any breed that has herding instincts is  making sure they have enough space to run around in and get a good workout.  It is essential to their mental/behavior and also their physical health and development.  My girls go out at least twice a day and spend at least an hour a day outside romping around and playing and trying to herd each other (and me). Never leave your animals outside unsupervised. I can’t stress this one enough. Especially puppies who still haven’t quite figured out what is supposed to go in their mouths and what isn’t. You also want to keep an eye on them if you are in region like I am in the summer there are lots of sightings of snakes. Bottom line is that you don’t get to open the door and just “let the dogs out” and still get to call yourself a responsible owner. Puppies are going to puppy and even older dogs can get into trouble.  I like to think of it as leaving toddlers outside – you wouldn’t leave a toddler outside unsupervised? Words of caution aside, there are myriad opportunities for you to have fun with your dogs outside, most don’t require anything other than a favorite toy or a ball.  The water hose can be fun only if you commit to bathing them afterwards if need be.  Nothing like muddy pawprints all over your house ! Or if you are real DIY  minded you can set up  some agility sets. Or you can supervise a romping game of fetch.  Outdoors and backyard time are wonderful opportunities for you and your dog to engage, have fun and learn a thing or two.   The post Backyard Shenanigans appeared first on The Tail Swishes.

Lets Play

A chew toy is a toy designed to be chewed by animals for purposes of stimulation and relief from boredom . There are several different types of chew toys, including rawhide, wood, paper and mineral. Chew toys are commonly associated with puppies and dogs, though they are also used for birds, rodents, and rabbits. Chew toys are a vital part of a happy, healthy animal’s life. Paper chew toys are made of non bleached non-toxic paper. They are an inexpensive, or often free, option for small pet owners and can provide hours of stimulation and play for small animals. One common paper chew toy is an empty toilet paper tube. These can double as tunnels for very small rodents, and can also be used as modified piñatas for larger small animals. Wadded up newspaper pages, old spineless books, and the commercial product Chubes are other commonly used paper chew toys. Mineral chew toys are made of flavored animal-safe minerals. These range from flavored fruit-shaped blocks for birds to ice-cream cone shaped mineral treats for rabbits. They also come shaped as bowls with fluffy minerals inside. A common mineral chew toy is the cuttlebone, a toy for birds that helps to keep nails and beaks trimmed and healthy. The post Lets Play appeared first on The Tail Swishes.

dog days

Puppies develop very quickly during their first three months, particularly after their eyes and ears open and they are no longer completely dependent on their mother. Their coordination and strength improve, they spar with their littermates, and begin to explore the world outside the nest. They play wrestling, chase, dominance, and tug-of-war games. Tail Waggin’

In ancient Mesopotamia, from the Old Babylonian period until the Neo-Babylonian, dogs were the symbol of Ninisina, the goddess of healing and medicine, The hunter god Muthappan from North Malabar region of Kerala has a hunting dog as his mount. Dogs are found in and out of the Muthappan Temple and offerings at the shrine take the form of bronze dog figurines. In Philippine mythology, Kimat who is the pet of Tadaklan, god of thunder, is responsible for lightning. The role of the dog in Chinese mythology includes a position as one of the twelve animals which cyclically represent years (the zodiacal dog). In Homer’s epic poem the Odyssey, when the disguised Odysseus returns home after 20 years he is recognized only by his faithful dog, Argos, who has been waiting for his return.
